These edible water balls could eliminate plastic packaging
You would have slurped water; guzzled it; sipped it. But have you ever eaten it? If you are wondering how that is even possible, then meet Ooho – the edible water balls. Pierre Paslier and Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, through there startup, Skipping Rocks Lab, were on a mission to find an alternative to plastic bottles, the ones that we buy every day and toss away. And it seems they have found one.
Firstly, the water is frozen into balls which are then dipped into an algae mixture that forms an outer covering membrane around the ice. The ice is then allowed to melt and return to its liquid state. This liquid is protected by an edible and biodegradable seal. To consume water, you either have to bite the tasteless membrane and sip the water or you can eat the entire ball at once. This membrane can also be used for other liquids like cold drinks; can also be colored and flavored. The packaging membrane of these water balls biodegrades in just 4-6 weeks, unlike its plastic counterparts that take up to 1000 years.
