The world’s favorite game also called “The Beautiful Game” ages more than 100 years. Many greats such as Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, Pele, Garrincha, George Best, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Platini, Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldo de Lima have graced the field and enthralled the fans of the sport with their trickery, goals, wild celebrations, jaw-dropping skills and of course their records. They all are in the upper echelon of the game and are no less than ‘Footballing Gods’ for fans and viewers the world over.
But what if I tell you there is a man who is one level above these Gods?
Is it possible, that he might not be from this planet at all?
Is he human?
Well, for all we know he is a native of Argentina hailing from Rosario and is third of four children of Jorge Messi, a steel factory manager, and his wife Celia Cuccittini. But how much of it is actually true?
Because the kind of performances this man is giving day in & day out that too on a weekly basis and that too for more than a decade forces us to ask this question – Is he really human?
Because there are no logical explanations behind his exploits. His legend has gone beyond the realms of mankind and mortals and people now have started calling him “GOD” or some people at least.
So much so that even the Pope who is also an Argentina native just like Messi is feeling threatened of his status as “Face & Voice of God” and on being asked of his views on the same, He said “In theory, it is a sacrilege. You can’t do it,” continuing further the 82-year-old said, “I don’t believe that. People could call him god, just as they might say ‘I adore you’, but the only god can be worshiped.
“These are people’s expressions. He is a god with the ball on the pitch. Those are popular expressions. Of course, he is great to watch… but he is not god.”
And you might also get the same answer from another man who goes by the name of “Cristiano Ronaldo” who will also reiterate what the Pope said with the only difference being that he will call himself the God at the end of that sentence. Which is not wrong in Ronaldo’s case because that type of mentality has allowed him to perform at the highest level for more than a decade.
He along with Messi are the two most consistent players of the 21st century. And hence the debate rages on between the two as to who is the real G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time). Ronaldo is Messi’s closest rival and is a legend in his own right but what Messi does on the football pitch is beyond comprehension, beyond comparisons and if it was any other era, Cristiano Ronaldo would have been the undisputed G.O.A.T.
But he is fighting for that title along with Messi which makes their rivalry all the more interesting and it is really a privilege for footballing fans all around the world to witness such a sporting rivalry which is breaking records and creating magical moments and setting benchmarks which I don’t think would be replicated in our lifetime, let alone be surpassed by any other footballer. The only other sporting rivalry which comes to mind that can match them is that of Federer – Nadal in Tennis.
It’s only a matter of time when unfortunately these 4 legends would retire and the world would be normal again. But that is still 3-4 years away and with the way Messi is playing right now, especially, in this season he has left each of his contemporaries in his wake.
I mean the stats don’t lie? Look at his form in the current 2018-19 season –
Messi is currently the leading goal scorer for Barcelona in La Liga as well as Europe’s top 5 leagues with 32 goals with Mbappe hot on his heels at 27 goals albeit in a much easier league (Ligue 1). He is also the top assist maker in the world with 21 assists across all competitions and is also the top scorer of UEFA Champions League with 8 goals to his name. He is so far involved in 63 goals (42 goals,21 assists) this season which is the most for any player and it’s just the beginning of April.
After coming fifth in last year’s Ballon Dor And FIFA Best Awards, Messi is a man (or an Alien, we don’t know yet) possessed to prove the world once again that we are not worthy of his talents.
Come this July, Messi might have his 10th La Liga, 5th Champions League, 6th European Golden Shoe, 1st Copa America and finally 6th Ballon Dor. The end of the year would tell better how much he manages to tick off the list.
And to think of it that Lionel Messi has a really good chance of getting all that in a span of 4 months is really scary!
And which again leads us to the question – Is he really human?
Or is he an alien?
Or is he really a GOD?
