Leader who won hearts, broke records and inspired minds

The unfortunate story which broke out on 6th August 2019 was the demise of a much-loved leader Smt Sushma Swaraj. She was a vibrant leader, a gifted prolific orator with infectious laughter, forceful sense of humor and constant support to the stranded Indians. A leader with such humane and noble could never be replaced. Her glorious years of work will be looked upon as a laudable model of governance.

Born into the RSS family of Haryana on 14th February 1952 the Sangh association was from her birth. She was a graduate in Political Science. She also won the award for the best Hindi speaker for three consecutive years in a completion organized by the language department of Haryana. She was a practicing lawyer in the Supreme Court where she became closely associated with the student wing of AVBP. During the emergency, her expertise in law led her to become a member of the socialist leader George Fernandes’s legal team. Thereafter being an active member of Jayprakash Narayan’s anti emergency movement she became a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party.

At a very young age of 25, she was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Haryana from 1977-82 and 1987-90. And later became the education minister of Haryana. Following this, she spent her four terms in Lok Sabha, three terms in Rajya Sabha and was elected thrice in the state assemblies. After Indira Gandhi, she was the second woman to hold the post of External affairs.

She has received applause from all around the world and has restored our faith in the bureaucracy. The ethos that she imparted to the ministry made people around her a better professionally as well as personally. The need of the Indian nationals was addressed in a much responsible and in a caring manner and she deserves singular credit for making such diplomatic mission successful.
