Microsoft founder and CEO Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates have been married for 25 years. One thing that has stayed the same throughout their long marriage is washing dishes together every night.
Most people will assume that doing household chores should be the least of your worries when you are one of the world’s richest men. And yet, the billionaire couple spend time in the kitchen washing dirty dishes together. This has become a tradition in their household, one that they have kept alive through the years despite their great wealth.
Melinda and Bill met back in 1987 when Melinda joined Microsoft. Today, they have three children in addition to being the founders of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s biggest private charity. In an interview to the Business Insider, Melinda shared that she felt alone in her marriage to Bill during her first pregnancy as he was busy with his work as Microsoft CEO. Things improved when they began to talk about their challenges and take time doing household chores as a family.
Melinda shared that early in their marriage, she used to be in the kitchen for 10-15 minutes after everyone else in the family had left for doing their last-minute things. One day, in the heat of the moment she said, “Nobody leaves the kitchen until I do!” And that was the start of a long tradition that has made the couple’s marriage stronger.
Dish-washing may seem like a simple chore, but equal sharing of responsibilities between the husband and wife can do wonders for the relationship. For Bill and Melinda, it’s been one of the secrets that has made their marriage happier and healthier!
